Types of Hip Surgery
Hip Dysplasia
One problem related to labral tears is that the socket of your joint can be shallow. This predisposes you to hip dysplasia. This condition can affect join loading which can lead to joint instability and labral tears. Our hip preservation specialists use different procedures to treat labral tears. Your surgery option depends on the cause and severity of your tear. One treatment option is a periacetabular osteotomy (PAO).
Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO)
PAO surgery corrects labral tears caused by hip dysplasia. Your surgeon cuts and realigns your bones to a normal position. This surgery will help prevent further damage to your joint.
Other treatment options include an arthroscopy or surgical dislocation and osteochondroplasty
鈥擧ip arthroscopy may help if you have a labral tear but don鈥檛 have severe hip dysplasia or other structural problems. Your surgeon inserts a small camera into your joint through small 鈥渒eyhole鈥 incisions. They use surgical instruments to repair the damage to your labrum. Your surgeon may fix your labrum in different ways depending on the damage:
-
Your surgeon stitches your labrum together (repair)
-
Your surgeon builds a new labrum (reconstruction
Hip Impingement Surgery
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is also called hip impingement. We offer different options for hip impingement surgery:
-
础谤迟丑谤辞蝉肠辞辫测鈥If you have cam impingement and mild cartilage damage, you may consider arthroscopy. This surgery is minimally invasive. Your surgeon makes small 鈥渒eyhole鈥 incisions (cuts) on the side of your hip. They can shape or remove the extra bone and damaged tissue.
-
Surgical dislocation and osteochondroplasty鈥In this procedure, your surgeon makes an incision (cut) on your hip. They carefully cut your thigh bone and bring it out of the joint for better access. Your surgeon trims and reshapes the head of your thigh bone and the rim of your hip socket to fit together correctly. Your surgeon uses screws to hold the bone back together. Surgeons use this method for more complex problems, like Perthes disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).

Hip Surgery Recovery
Each person recovers differently from hip surgery. Your recovery will depend on the type of procedure you have. Most people can walk immediately after arthroscopic surgeries with the use of crutches. Some more complicated surgeries may require you to use crutches for a few weeks.
Your surgeon may recommend you go to physical therapy to rebuild your hip鈥檚 strength, range, of motion, and stability. How often you attend physical therapy depends on your needs. Do home exercises when not at physical therapy.
Most patients can return to low-impact activities, such as walking, stationary biking, and swimming after surgery. After three to six months, you can expect to do higher intensity activities.
If you have a more complicated surgery with a slower recovery, it may take six months to return to everyday activities. Your provider will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure your hip heals properly. You can expect to see improvements one to two years after surgery.
Travel After Hip Surgery
Medication and Pain Management After Hip Surgery
Your provider will prescribe medication after your surgery. Take your medications as directed by your provider. Some discomfort after surgery is to be expected. Do not take your narcotics to be 鈥榩ain-free.鈥 If you have had a blood clot, or have a family history of blood clots, you may be prescribed a blood thinner.
To limit the risks associated with narcotics, your provider may prescribe alternative medicines like anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen medications like Tylenol. You can also use ice packs or cool compresses to relieve discomfort.
Wound Care
Follow the wound care instructions your provider gives you. Keep your dressing on as directed. Your provider will let you know when you can submerge your incision in water.
Returning to Work or School After Hip Surgery
You can return to desk work as long as your recovery is progressing appropriately. Most people return to light work within four weeks. You can resume heavy labor like lifting or climbing ladders three months after surgery.
You must be off narcotic medications before you can return to school. Most patients take up to seven days off. Ask your school about using an elevator key so you don鈥檛 have to climb stairs.
